Top Tourist Attractions in Swaziland (Eswatini)

Mkhaya Game Reserve
Spectacular Mkhaya was established in 1979 to save the pure Nguni breed of cattle from extinction. It’s known, however, for its black and white rhino populations (it boasts that you’re more likely to meet rhinos here than anywhere else in Africa). It’s not all about rhinos though – look out for tsessebe (antelope), giraffes, buffaloes, hippo and crocodiles. It’s near the hamlet of Phuzumoya, off the Manzini–Big Bend road.

Mantenga Cultural Village & Nature Reserve
The entrance fee to this tranquil, thickly forested reserve covers a guided tour of the Swazi Cultural Village, a ‘living’ cultural village with authentic beehive huts and cultural displays, plus a sibhaca dance (performed daily at 11.15am and 3.15pm) and a visit to the impressive Mantenga Falls. The reserve is also great for hiking; day hikers pay only E50. Although it’s not a big wildlife park, it offers a chance to see vervet monkeys, baboons, warthogs, nyalas and duikers.

Hlane Royal National Park
You come to Hlane Royal National Park for the big stuff. eSwatini’s largest protected area, this well-organised reserve is home to elephants, lions, leopards, white rhinos and many antelope species, and also offers impressive opportunities for birdwatching. Activities include overnight bush trails, a dedicated rhino drive, guided bird walks, mountain biking and cultural tours.

Sibebe Rock
About 8km northeast of Mbabane is Sibebe Rock, a massive granite dome hulking over the surrounding countryside. It’s the world’s second-largest monolith, after Australia’s Uluru, but is considerably less visited. Much of the rock is completely sheer, and dangerous if you should fall, but climbing it is a good adrenaline charge if you’re reasonably fit and relish looking down steep rock faces.

Malolotja Nature Reserve
The ruggedly beautiful Malolotja reserve is a prime spot for hiking, with varied terrain to keep walkers interested. The centrepiece is the Komati River, which cuts through a gorge, creating mini waterfalls and rapids as it goes. Big name wildlife is absent, but you’ll likely see zebras, elands, wildebeest and various species of antelope. Birdwatchers are in heaven, with over 280 species recorded within the reserve’s boundaries.

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary
There are many reasons to visit this private reserve – eSwatini’s first protected area: it’s quiet, easily accessible and really rather beautiful. Its 46 sq km are home to hippos, crocodiles, zebras, blue wildebeest, warthogs and a host of antelope, as well as the Nyonyane Mountain, whose exposed granite peak, known as Execution Rock, reaches 1110m. It’s also an outdoor-lover’s paradise, with a wide range of activities available.

Nisela Safaris
Nisela is a small private reserve nestled at the foot of the Lebombo Mountains south of Nsoko. Wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, warthogs and numerous species of antelope are widespread throughout the reserve, but there’s no big stuff. It’s also famed for its abundant birdlife, especially raptors. Day visitors are also welcome to take part in the activities, including wildlife drives (E150 to E180) and guided walks (E150). If you want to explore the reserve with your own vehicle, a 4WD is recommended.

Mlawula Nature Reserve
Mlawula doesn’t boast many large mammals, though you’ll surely see a few antelope and perhaps a spotted hyena. The draw here, though, is the excellent birdwatching – close to 100 species are recorded – and above all, the network of hiking trails. Ask for the Trails and Day Walks brochure at the gate, detailing 10 self-guided walks ranging from a one-hour stroll to a full-day hike.
