Submerge Yourself In The Great Sardine Run – Moalboal
The Philippines is famous for its incredible underwater experiences. One of the most popular activities for tourists is swimming with whale sharks in Oslob, although the ethics of doing so are questionable. The tours operators feed the sharks meaning that they stay in one place, interfering with their natural migration pattern.
Meet the Endangered Tarsier – Bohol
The Tarsier is a small carnivorous primate with adorable goggling eyes. Although they were once found across mainland Asia, North America and Africa, they now only reside in densely vegetated forests in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Admire the Chocolate Hills (on an ATV) – Bohol
The Chocolate Hills are an intriguing geological formation of over 1,200 grassy mounds scattered near Carmen in the Bohol Province. During the dry season, grass on the cone-shaped hills becomes singed and consequently turns brown, giving the Chocolate Hills their rather unique name.
Explore Limestone Towers – El Nido
Vine-clad limestone towers jutting out of aquamarine-coloured water are an iconic image of the Philippines. The images you see online aren’t edited – the scenery of El Nido is just as mesmerizingly beautiful in reality! There were many times on a boat tour of El Nido that I really had to pinch myself at this real-life natural beauty.
Cruise a UNESCO Listed Underground River – Puerto Princesa
Awarded the title of the ‘7th wonder of the world’, the planet’s longest navigable underground river has to make an appearance on any Philippines bucket list! The 8.2km long cave system is located in the protected Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, on the Western coast of Palawan. The limestone stalagmites and stalactites create one of the world’s most complex cave systems and you can explore it by boat with a head torch.
Go on a Firefly Night Kayak – Bohol
As dusk sets in, glide through the mangroves of the Abatan River as glittering fireflies dance and dart around you during their mesmerising nightly mating ritual. It’s one of the most magical and serene nature experiences to have in the Philippines. Kayaking is the most eco-friendly and peaceful way to explore the riverbank. You’ll be serenaded by the sounds of the nighttime jungle – the crickets, the frogs and the lapping of the water.
Surf World Famous Breaks at Cloud 9 – Siargao
Siargao is said to be one of the best places for surfing in the whole of the Philippines. In fact, it is home to Cloud 9, one of the top 10 surf spots in the entire world. The best time to surf here is late August – November when the monsoon generates awesome offshore winds. If you’re around in September, you may even catch the annual international surfing competition, the Siargao Surfing Cup.
Chase Waterfalls – Bohol
You can find stunning waterfalls all over the Philippines, but my favourite two from my trip would have to be located in Bohol, the most jungle-like island I visited. Pahangog Twin Falls is one of the most picture-perfect waterfalls, tucked away in a little jungle oasis in the south. The water cascades from a height over two rock faces, tumbling into a gorgeous, large emerald blue-green pool.
Calle Crisologo street in Vigan City
Step into history as you wander down the enchanting street of Calle Crisologo in Vigan City, a gem that absolutely deserves a spot on your itinerary in the Philippines. Located about 400 kilometers north of the country’s capital, Manila City, the historic city of Vigan in the province of Ilocos Sur transports you to the 16th century with its old-world charm and beautifully preserved Spanish colonial architecture.
Nacpan Beach in El Nido Palawan Island
El Nido town in Palawan Island is world-renowned for its paradise-like islands and lagoons, but a 45-minute motorcycle ride from its main town takes you to another idyllic destination: Nacpan Beach. Island hopping escapades in El Nido, including a visit to the popular Big Lagoon and other top beaches should not be missed. But after a jam-packed day of visiting coves, white-sand beaches in El Nido with majestic limestone cliffs, a trip to Nacpan Beach is highly recommended.
Tubbataha Reef diving spot in Palawan Island
Tubbataha Reef is regarded as one of the top diving spots in the Philippines and the world. Located in the heart of the Sulu Sea, it is considered a center of marine biodiversity and a haven not just for divers but also for marine conservationists. The only way to get to this marine sanctuary is through a liveaboard vessel from Puerto Princesa City in Palawan Island.
Mayon Volcano in Albay Bicol Region
As soon as your flight lands at the airport in Bicol International Airport of Albay province, the world’s most perfect volcanic cone and the most active volcano in the Philippines greets you with its majesty. Mayon Volcano is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the Philippines and is a top attraction that you shouldn’t miss when doing Bicol tours.
Historical Intramuros and Fort Santiago in Manila City
Take a stroll through history lane to the walled city of Intramuros in the City of Manila, one of the top landmarks in the Philippines. This 64-hectare Spanish fortress was erected by Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and was destroyed by the end of World War II. However, the ruins remain today and has become a must-visit attraction when in Manila City. It is also home to several universities, government offices, and local shops.
Taal Volcano and Lake View in Tagaytay City
Locals from Manila City often take a quick escape during the weekends and make their way south to Tagaytay City, famous for its cool weather. It’s also popular for being one of the best kid-friendly places near Manila. The best Tagaytay hotels have a view that faces Taal Volcano, one of the world’s smallest active volcanoes. It sits on an island within a lake within an island. Taal Volcano is geographically located in Batangas province, but for the best view of this Philippine icon, your best option is to see it in Tagaytay City instead.
